As we approach the Lunar New Year, also known as Tet in Vietnam, CTNC (Center for Technology and Nature Conservation) embarked on an insightful journey to survey the diverse turtle species inhabiting the scenic landscapes of Yen Bai province. This expedition aimed to shed light on the status of turtle populations, particularly focusing on the enigmatic Palea steindachneri, commonly known as the “Ba Ba Gai” turtle.

During our meticulous investigation, CTNC experts were astounded by the abundance of Palea steindachneri farms dotting the serene countryside of Yen Bai province. Furthermore, our team ventured into the heart of nature, exploring the pristine Na Hau nature reserve, where a myriad of turtle species found sanctuary amidst the lush greenery.

However, amidst this natural splendor, a glaring reality emerged – the absence of robust conservation efforts within Yen Bai province. Despite its status as a potential haven for numerous critical turtle species, including the iconic Hoan Kiem turtle Rafetus swinhoei, the critical endangered Wattle neck softshell turtle Palea steindachneri, the elusive Four eyed turtle Sacalia quadriocellata, and other remarkable species like big headed turtle Platysternon megacephalum, Vietnamese golden coin turtle Cuora cyclornata, and Indo-chinese box turtle Cuora galbinifrons, there is a notable dearth of conservation initiatives.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, CTNC is taking a proactive stance in spearheading conservation efforts within Yen Bai province. Through collaborative partnerships and community engagement, we are committed to implementing comprehensive conservation programs aimed at safeguarding these invaluable turtle populations.

Our ongoing projects encompass a multifaceted approach, starting with the Palea steindachneri species, to ensure the restoration and preservation of these magnificent creatures within their natural habitats in Vietnam. By leveraging scientific research, community outreach, and advocacy, CTNC strives to mitigate the threats facing these vulnerable species and foster a sustainable coexistence between humans and turtles.

As we embark on this conservation journey, we invite stakeholders, conservation enthusiasts, and the broader community to join hands with CTNC in our mission to protect and conserve Yen Bai’s rich biodiversity. Together, we can make a tangible difference in safeguarding the future of these remarkable turtle species for generations to come.

Stay tuned for updates on our conservation initiatives and learn how you can contribute to our collective efforts in preserving Vietnam’s natural heritage.
