Vietnam is home to a rich biodiversity at top 16 globally, including a diverse array of primate species. Among these, the Red-Shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix nemaeus) stands out as a charismatic and endangered species, facing numerous threats to its survival. In the pursuit of preserving Vietnam’s primate heritage, the Center for Nature Conservation (CTNC) has undertaken a vital mission to safeguard the Red-Shanked Douc through comprehensive research and conservation efforts.
The Red-Shanked Douc is an iconic primate species native to Vietnam, known for its striking and vibrant coat of reddish-brown fur on its legs, contrasting with the grey body and a dazzling array of colors on its face. Despite its captivating appearance, the species is confronted with severe challenges, such as habitat loss, hunting, and illegal wildlife trade, putting it at risk of extinction.
CTNC, an esteemed conservation organization, has taken on the responsibility of protecting the Red-Shanked Douc from the brink of extinction. Through a combination of research and conservation actions, CTNC aims to gather crucial insights into the species’ population size, identify threats, and implement effective mitigation measures.
CTNC’s research initiatives include in-depth studies on the Red-Shanked Douc’s population dynamics, behavior, and habitat requirements. By conducting thorough investigations, CTNC seeks to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the species, including the impact of human activities, changes in the landscape, and potential areas for conservation intervention.
CTNC is not limited to research; it actively engages in on-the-ground conservation actions. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, CTNC collaborates closely with the authorities of Bac Hai Van Protection Forest. This partnership is pivotal in ensuring the effective implementation of the Species Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) and a holistic approach to conservation within the protected forest area.
CTNC’s mission involves identifying and addressing threats to the Red-Shanked Douc. By working closely with the local communities, raising awareness, and implementing targeted conservation strategies, CTNC aims to mitigate the factors endangering the species. This includes advocating for stronger legal enforcement against wildlife trafficking and promoting sustainable land-use practices.
CTNC acknowledges the importance of empowering local authorities to protect endangered species effectively. By supporting Bac Hai Van Protection Forest in adopting SMART technology and embracing a holistic approach to conservation, CTNC contributes to building the capacity of those on the front lines of wildlife protection. This collaborative effort is crucial for the long-term survival of the Red-Shanked Douc and other endangered species within the protected forest area.
CTNC’s dedication to conserving the Red-Shanked Douc in Vietnam exemplifies the vital role that research and on-the-ground action play in protecting endangered primate species. By providing valuable insights, advocating for conservation policies, and collaborating with local authorities, CTNC is making a significant contribution to the broader mission of preserving Vietnam’s primate heritage for future generations.
Acknowledgments:
The comprehensive conservation initiatives undertaken by CTNC for the protection of the Red-Shanked Douc are made possible through the generous support of the Species Conservation Fund under the USAID and WWF Vietnam program. This collaborative effort highlights the significance of national & international partnerships in addressing global conservation challenges.
The USAID and WWF Vietnam program has played a pivotal role in enabling CTNC to implement a holistic approach to protect species that may have received less attention in the past. This support extends beyond financial assistance, encompassing shared expertise, technical guidance, and a shared commitment to biodiversity conservation.
By fostering collaboration between local organizations, government authorities, and international partners, the joint efforts aim to strengthen the protection of the Red-Shanked Douc in the Bac Hai Van region. The integrated approach, encompassing research, community engagement, and technological innovation, is a testament to the collective dedication to preserving Vietnam’s rich biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for the Red-Shanked Douc and its habitat.
