The Center for Technology and Nature Conservation (CTNC) has embarked on a critical mission to safeguard the endangered Red-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nemaeus), whose population in the Hai Van Pass area (Bac Hai Van Protection Forest) has been overlooked and neglected.
The Red-shanked Douc is teetering on the brink of extinction due to rampant hunting and habitat loss. Recognizing the urgent need for action, CTNC has initiated a comprehensive conservation project aimed at protecting this iconic species.
The project, funded by the Species Conservation Fund (SCF) of the USAID Biodiversity Conservation project, commenced with an extensive interview research and awareness campaign, conducted from January 25th to 30th, 2024. A structured interview involving 75 participants, including local residents, staff and management board members of the Bac Hai Van Protection Forest, shed light on various aspects of the species’ status and the threats it faces.
Despite being classified as highly protected under national law, the Red-shanked Douc is still facing on hunting incidents. However, encouragingly, many respondents demonstrated a commendable knowledge of the species and its legal protection status.
Preliminary findings suggest that the population of Red-shanked Douc in the region may not be as depleted as feared, with numerous sightings reported across various locations. However, field survey phase, slated to begin shortly, is expected to provide deeper insights into the species’ distribution and abundance.
“Our mission is clear to ensure the survival of the Red-shanked Doucs in the Hai Van Pass area. Through collaborative efforts with local communities and stakeholders, we are committed to implementing practical conservation measures that will secure a future for this magnificent species”.
– Pham Van Thong, CTNC Deputy Director
As the project progresses, CTNC remains dedicated to transparency and will continue to provide updates on its conservation efforts.
